WNY Peace Center's Weekly News October 20, 2011 part 2
Christine Eber
Professor Emerita, Anthropology, New Mexico State University
"The Journey of a Tzotzil-Maya Woman of Chiapas, Mexico: Pass Well Over
the Earth" by Christine Eber and "Antonia" is now available from the
University of Texas Press. This book was the focus of a
presentation by Christine when she was the speaker at the 2009 LASC
annual event. The book chronicles the life of "Antonia," in her own
words. She describes her involvement in three social movements in
highland Chiapas - the weaving co-op movement, the Catholic
Liberation Theology movement, and the Zapatista movement - and also
tells the story of how immigration has effected her family. Her
youngest son has been working in Chinese restaurants in the U.S. for
three years now. Excerpts from the beginning of the book can be
found at: http://www.utexas.edu/utpress/excerpts/exebejou.html
There is also a facebook page for the book: www.facebook.com/
eberandantonia The book can be ordered on line at the U. of Texas
Press website for $36.85, a 33% discount. It will come out in
paperback in about a year, but will not include the many beautiful color
photos in the center of the book. Royalties will go to "Antonia" ++++

A worsening economic crisis; three disastrous wars that have killed
millions of people and cost trillions of dollars stolen from essential
programs for OIL, OIL, OIL and the U.S. corporate drive for markets,
profit and empire – this is why the U.S. government has *FALSELY* accused
the Iranian government of sponsoring a terrorist plot in the United
States.
Washington’s campaign against Iran for an alleged assassination
plot lacks evidence and fails every test of logic The U.S government is
making unbelievable, far-tetched allegations that somehow the
Iranian government was involved in a bizarre plot to assassinate the
Saudi Arabian ambassador in Washington. Anyone capable of independent
thought has raised questions as to its truth. So why is the U.S.
government desperate to use an unbelievable pretext to begin a
campaign of sanctions and possible war against Iran?
The accusation comes as militant mass actions spurred by austerity and
mass suffering at the hands of corporate greed are literally
sweeping the globe. The Occupy Wall Street movement has captured
peoples' imagination everywhere. Within the U.S. over 110 ongoing
occupations and 1,454 support actions have been reported, while mass
uprisings are continuing across the Middle East, Europe, and Latin
America.
The wild and fabricated charge against Iran has been rolled out in an all
too familiar pattern which was used to hype the wars against Iraq,
Afghanistan, and Libya: unfounded charges with no evidence, high level
leaks, scripted quotes about threats to national security from top
officials, calls for stricter sanctions, and military retaliation. All is
repeated by a frenzied, coordinated media (big business corporate media
tied to the military) campaign. The point is to set the stage in the minds
of millions of people who are now rising up in righteous anger against the
Wall Street banks and the U.S. Government that their enemy is somewhere
else, rather than right here at home.

The arrest of over 700 people on Saturday, Oct 1 on the Brooklyn
Bridge by the New York City Police Department is an outrage and an

started arresting hundreds of activists. This is entrapment.
A loose network of organizations and individuals called the

growing and enthusiastic mass support giving voice to the Bail Out the

*The Occupy Wall Street has grown into OCCUPATIONS in 110 cities
across the U.S. and more than 1,500 actions, events, protests in
solidarity with this struggle of the 99% against the bankers, war makers
and corporate power.*
The threatened expulsion of Occupy Wall Street activists by the
police is developing into a mammoth political crisis with Bloomberg at
the center of it. This could point the way to a bigger struggle to target
Bloomberg as the richest person in the city who has called for “the
cleaning” of the park which includes the removal of all
materials including bedding. Make no mistake about this: this
“cleaning” is a poor disguise by the state to crush the Occupy
Wall Street movement that is now tens of thousands strong.

Statement issued by students and activists in Denver, Colorado:
*Occupy the Campuses/Decolonize Our Minds*
The college campuses across this country are a microcosm of the
financial problems that our communities are facing. Students are
struggling with high levels of debt, corporations have become a higher
priority than the students on campuses, university workers are denied
their right to organize for better working conditions and the
education we receive only serves to further a dominant paradigm that
supports an economic system rife with exploitation.
As students, we carry with us the historic burden of being a radical
voice and often the deciding factor that has pressured movements to go
beyond minor reforms and move towards fundamental change in the
dominant societal structure. Therefore, we are calling for an
occupation of the Auraria Campus that will be the opening salvo in a
national movement to occupy university campuses. A network of campuses
across the country is prepared to stand in solidarity with our call to
action

PANYS Projects:
The Cost of War Awareness Project: our "move the money" - new
priorities work. We are supporting our electronic sign and getting more
and more involved with the Occupy Wall Street crowd that is near our
office. We are going to continue pressuring our lawmakers with a
state-wide lobby day at the end of the year to convince them to change
their spending priorities! We are taking our anti-militarism,
anti-war, and anti-nuclear weapon work and synthesizing it with our new
priorities work, all under the COW Awareness Project.
- Close Indian Point Campaign: we are working on an educational
campaign to inform New Yorkers about the dangers of the Indian Point
nuclear energy center in Buchanan, NY - 35 miles from NYC. These power
plants are almost 40 years old, have an awful safety record, are not
earthquake ready despite being on top of 2 fault lines, and are
unnecessary for providing power to the surrounding area. The
evacuation plan of 10 miles was called "inadequate" by an independent
report in 2003 commissioned by then Governor Pataki, and any disaster or
attack on Indian Point would put over 8 million people in instant danger.
We will expand this campaign to other areas of the state, such as
Syracuse, where similar problems with nuclear reactors exist.
- Student Organizing: we are underway with creating new, officially
recognized student chapters at campuses in New York State. We are
supporting a new part-time student organizing coordinator, who has already
established connections at 6 colleges/universities.

Cuban Airline Short of Aircraft Due To U.S. Blockade
Isaac Saney, Chair of the Canadian Network on Cuba, says that Saturday
flights between Cuba and Montreal have been cancelled. "It seems that this
change has occurred because of the ongoing U.S. economic war against Cuba.
Cubana used to lease its aircraft from TACA. However, the recent takeover
of TACA by a U.S. company meant that Cuba could no longer lease planes
from TACA. In establishing new arrangements (i.e. finding a company from
which they could lease planes) Cuba had to forgo flying Cuba into Montreal
on Saturdays."
TACA Is a Costa Rican Airline. The breaking of business relations between
Cuba and TACA is yet another example of the economic screws being
tightened down on Cuba through the extraterritorial extension of U.S. law +++

The Night of the Heartbreaking Scream. The night of March 22, 1963, a
group of
counterrevolutionaries led by Everardo Diaz Brunet, known as "Frias",
which
operated at the time in the Cubitas hills in the province of Camaguey,
were
thirsty for blood. This group, like many others in several places in
Cuba, above
all in the central area, responded to a plan set since October 10, 1960,
in the
United States.During that time the Dwight D. Eisenhower administration
carried out
a plan called 'Covert Action Program against Cuba' which contemplated
sabotage and
the incitation of armed counterrevolution in the island's mountainous
region.
Frias' group was part of the project. Close to midnight on March 21,
1963, there
was an assassination fiesta that began with a crime that the local
population has
never forgotten. The scene of the crime was the La Fe farm in the Meseta
de San
Felipe. Emilio Pisco Hernandez, who was 16 years old, dressed in the
uniform of
the National Revolutionary Militia, returned from a visit to his
girlfriend's
house accompanied by nine-year-old Rafael, one of his brothers. When they
approached the humble home where they lived, the group of
counterrevolutionaries
appeared and pushed their way into the house. "We will kill the soldier,"
said one
of the assassins, recalled Rafael years later and who recently passed
away. Once
he entered into the bohio, the father of the family, Spanish immigrant
Ramon Pisco
Bardanca, then 69 years of age, and who favored the socialist ideas,
noticed the
situation and firmly said: "I go where my son goes!" The group took
Emilio and
Ramon and far from the home committed the cruelest crime ever: first hung
the
young Emilio in front of his father. Later they did the same with the
Spanish
farmer.
