Description of the Task Force: In the US and globally the interests of corporations and the wealthy are taking precedence “...to the detriment of the needs of the vast majority of the people of the world..." resulting in extreme poverty and exploitation, wars and environmental degradation.
This task force would explore these issues, and develop educational and direct action plans to confront them. Possible activities may include: developing and distributing educational
materials, hosting movie nights of relevant movies, demonstrations and street theater, letter-writing campaigns, etc.
You are welcome to join, and participate on any level. The group will develop plans and actions using a consensus model.

LASC Coffeehouses: third Monday of each month
Mon. Nov 21, 7 PM. Coffeehouse/Film at Hallwalls: "Will the Real Terrorist Please Stand Up" This new documentary chronicles half a century of hostile US Cuba relations by telling
the story of the Cuban five, intelligence agents sent to penetrate Cuban exile terrorist groups in Miami and now serving long prison sentences. The film highlights decades of assassinations and
sabotage at first backed then ignored by the very government that launched a war against terrorism. In the film, viewers see leading terrorists, now in their 80s, recounting their deeds, and Cuban state security officials explaining why they infiltrated agents into violent Miami exile groups.
The film, featuring Danny Glover and 84 year old Fidel Castro in key scenes, raises and tries to answer the question: what did Cuba do to deserve such hostile treatment? It traces key events
from the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis, through multiple assassination attempts on Fidel Castro s life. This documentary reveals a story of violence that also echoed on the streets of Washington DC, New York and especially Miami where Cuban American critics of the bombers and shooters also wound up dead.

Immersion El Salvador Film premier, and Concert featuring Guellermo Cuéllar
(part of the Joseph J. Naples ’41 Conversations in Christ & Culture Lecture and Performance Series 2011-201)
"On October 29, the Video Institute at Canisius will present the premier of the documentary film, Immersion El Salvador. Along with this premier, we are fortunate to host the highly celebrated
Salvadoran folk singer and composer of El Salvador’s popular mass, Guellermo Cuéllar.
Follow a group of students and faculty as they travel to El Salvador with the Institute for the Global Study of Religion at Canisius College. Immersion: El Salvador, a 30-minute documentary produced by the Canisius College Video Institute, highlights the students’ journey of
self- awareness and enlightenment as they explore faith, religion, culture, and justice in this Central American country. In addition to tonight’s premier we feature a concert by Guillermo
Cuéllar. Cuéllar is one of the most famous singer/songwriters in El Salvador. A close friend of the martyred Archbishop Oscar Romero, several of Guellar’s songs, from his Salvadoran Popular Mass were featured in the movie Romero. Over the past two decades Cuellar has traveled and performed extensively throughout the world."

OCCUPY BUFFALO Continues!
Peacemakers,
Thanks to all who participated in the Peace Center's Friday night emergency demo at Niagara Square in Buffalo NY. About 10 members of the Peace Center attended along with 50 Occupy Buffalo occupiers. Those 50 stayed overnight into Saturday, while PC members retired to the warm of comfort of their homes.
Saturday night about 40 occupiers braved the continued winds and rain and stayed overnight into Sunday. And another 40 will stay overnight into Monday, and beyond.
Sunday evening Peace Center member Steve Gareau and I visited them. Their current needs are the following:
1. Clean, warm socks and gloves (it's raining cats and dogs....)
2. A very large tent 10 x 16 at least....with center pole....Occupy Buffalo has identified a specific tent and collected $700 toward the $1500 it will cost. You can help too by sending a check to the WNY Peace Center -- put "Witness Fund - tent" in the memo line. You can also donate online
by going to www.WNYPeace.org. Click on Witness Fund...
When PC member Steve Gareau heard about their needs he purchase 3 tents Sunday evening....along with several large tarps. Earlier, a couple of other PC members also said they will bring more tents soon. It's abundantly clear that many people are doing many little things to
ease the efforts of 40 people braving the elements in Niagara Square: while Steve and I were there someone brought in several gallons of clam chowder soup and others were dropped money in the large collection jar.
Several Peace Center members are checking in daily to see to their laundry needs: thank you Lucille, Val and Ellen........... Charlie
Two porta-pottys on -site,finally!-will be cleaned twice weekly!! Specialthanks to the Preservationists who are in town. They went out of their way to inform Mayor Brown that Occupy Buffalo was not a hindrance to their stay!!
Victor Toro, a Chilean, was arrested by U.S. border patrol on July 5, 2007 on an Amtrak train in Rochester, NY. He is a victim of the anti-immigrant backlash sweeping this country.
The Victor Toro Defense Committee states that Toro was racially profiled, asked for papers and detained. Victor and his spouse Nieves Ayress are both long time fighters for social justice in the U.S. and in their homeland years ago.
In Chile, Victor was instrumental in struggles for basic survival for his community including the fight for water and housing. Nieves is a long time activist for women and indigenous rights as well. In March of this year, the judge presiding over the case of Victor Toro denied Toro’s request for political asylum. Toro faces possible deportation anytime. The Defense Committee is asking that Victor be allowed to remain in the U.S. since deportation back to Chile would uproot him from his family and community in the Bronx

Cory Wanless sits at his desk in downtown Toronto, flipping through photo after photo of burning huts and maimed bodies. He points out where Adolfo Ich was hacked in the arm with a
machete before being shot in the head, and where the home belonging to one of 11 women allegedly raped once stood in Lote Ocho, a small village in Guatemala. Wanless, a lawyer at Klippensteins Barristers and Solicitors, is working on two cases that have implicated
Canadian mining company HudBay Minerals Inc. and its subsidiary, HMI Nickel Inc., in serious human rights abuses in Guatemala. Both cases concern Guatemala's CGN security forces, employed by HMI Nickel.
In Choc v. HudBay, it's alleged that security personnel shot and killed Adolfo Ich, a well-known Mayan Q'eqchi community organizer, in public and in broad daylight on September 27,
2009. His wife, Angelica Choc, has brought a wrongful death case forward against HudBay. In the other lawsuit, Caal v. HudBay, it's alleged that CGN employees, the Guatemalan army
and police took part in the gang rape of 11 Mayan Q'eqchi women during the forceful eviction of their homes in Lote Ocho. The women are suing HudBay for negligence. In a statement from HudBay, John Vincic, vice-president of investor relations and corporate communications, said, "In
both cases we believe the allegations to be groundless, and we are defending ourselves vigorously against them. ...We continue to cooperate fully with Guatemalan authorities to
ensure all the facts are uncovered." Both cases raise the significant dilemma of who should take
responsibility for human rights violations when business-as-usual goes wrong.
