WNY Peace Center's Weekly News October 5 2011

Peacemakers,

Friday October 7 marks the 10th anniversary of the beginning of the Afghan
War.  Osama Bin Laden has been executed, without the benefit of judicial
process. But have we "won" the war(s) yet? Are there any parades
celebrating victory? What have Presidents Bush and Obama and a very
compliant Congress accomplished in 10 years?

Here's a list of their achievements in veteran's issues, judicial process,
and economics:

Even if they are fortunate enough to return home and escape redeployment -
once you join an armed service you're drafted forever --our veterans continue to pay for wars with their health. Since 9/11/2001,we sent 2.2 million service people to war, 42% of those have suffered re-deployment, and 109,000 service people are casualties. The VA treats
711,000 patients, 52% are being treated for mental illnesses, 211,000 are
particularly at risk for PTSD, and the VA receives almost 10,000 new
patients a month. There are 30,000 service people diagnosed with PTSD who
remain on active duty. Veterans' crisis line received 463,000 telephone
calls from former and current warriors in crisis, and 200,000 calls from
family members of veterans. Suicides are rampant: 17,000 warriors have
been "rescued" from suicide, 2,300 committed suicide while on active duty,
and 1,000 veterans attempt suicide per month. There are 77,000 veterans
who are homeless on any given night in America, and 650,000 veterans who
are awaiting permission to receive treatment from the VA.  And what are
the corresponding numbers for the Iraq and Afghan service people?  In
Iraq, we have killed over 1 million civilians, and the civilian deaths in
Afghanistan continue to be uncounted.

On the legal front, we have lost the original meaning of the words in
those formerly cherished documents, the Constitution and the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights. President Obama now has the self-authorized
authority to assassinate anyone on Earth - American citizenship
notwithstanding. With preciously few exceptions, Congresspeople
enthusiastically agrees to Obama's execution policies. Droning people
around the world only increases hatred of U.S. -- and such hatred inspires
more terrorism, that, in turn, inspires us to spend more for armaments.

God, the U.S. arms industry and gigantic untaxed corporations forbids a
reasonable answer to the question: why should they hate us?

Financially, the effects of insane war and tax policy trickles down in the
form of budget cuts at the state and local level. If you do not have a
loved one who has served, don't assume you are unaffected by the
continuous war policy: your bank account, or stock portfolio, is getting
hit severely. If you were unlucky to choose the wrong parents, you start
out in life without financial backing and ripe for future significant
debt.

We are paying for all these wars with borrowed money because Bush refused
-- and Obama continues to refuse -- to tax the wealthy at a rate that's
fair relative to the other 99% of Americans. A tiny tax of 2.3% on people
of extreme wealth would take care of all our financial problems.  Instead
of placing that feather-light burden on the wealthy, we fired 577,000
state employees across the country,  we have 3,000 young Americans dying
every 21 days due to lack of health insurance, and 36 librarians fired
from our local libraries in Buffalo and many more, beyond Western New
York.

Every book thrown out by the Buffalo and Erie County Public Library, every
worker fired, every unfilled pothole, every homeowner foreclosed, every
unrepaired rusty bridge, every solar panel not on someone's roof, every
glacially slow Amtrak train, every sick person thrown out of an emergency
room --  can be traced back to the decisions to fund armaments instead of
people.

We spent the money. Have we won the war? No one has won this war except the
gigantic US corporations who fund political life in America, and the CEOs
that run them. The CEOs are the ones hosting the glorious victory parades
upon receipt of their quarterly financial statements. As a member of the
unruly 99%, you're not invited to their very private continuing
celebrations. If you're an undocumented alien, you might get a job
cleaning up afterwards , but please pay your own social security, health
insurance and tuition from your non-living wages, and avoid any mode of
public transportation -- you might get ICED.

As all members of the WNY Peace Center know, this has been the situation
for more than 10 years -- so where is the hope?

It's absolutely wonderful to see massive numbers of young people becoming
involved in nonviolent demonstrations -- they are turning out in droves
in spite of what we have done to them: through the educational system, the
student debt, Fox News, single parentage, non-living wages and
high-fructose corn syrup.

The "Occupy Something Movements" are spreading across the country: Occupy
Wall St, Occupy Freedom Square in Washington DC., and this includes a
fledgeling Occupy Buffalo (noontime Saturdays at Niagara Square in front
of City Hall).

Seven members of the WNY Peace Center traveled to Washington DC on October
5 to participate in occupying Freedom Square.  We honor them and all
others who are occupying something around the U.S. and beyond.

The WNY Peace Center continues to offer subsidized bus tickets to
Washington DC and NY City as the occupations will be continuous.

Why has it taken 10 years? Why has it taken thousands of years?

Peace,

Charley

*** Congratulations to Women in Black - Buffalo! Each week at noontime on
Saturdays, they have continually occupied (on a weekly basis, regardless
of
weather) the space at Elmwood and Bidwell for 10 years, starting October
13, 2001. Occupy Elmwood and Bidwell Ave., Buffalo!!

You don't have to wear black, you don't have to be a woman, you don't have
to be a Buffalonian, and you don't have to hold a sign. Please do stand
with WIB-Buffalo when you can.

***The Buffalo Activist, a publication of the WNY Peace Center.
We invite members and friends of the WNY Peace Center to submit articles
to the Buffalo Activist. Please submit your articles by October 15. We
especially welcome articles from people who experienced Occupy Freedom
Square in Washington DC, Wall Street, and other "Occupy" events spreading
across the land. Send your contribution to Director@wnypeace.org.

Please keep it short: 300-400 words.

Thank you.

***A note from Peace Action:

The Congressional Super Committee of 12 legislators are making big decisions
about what Congress should do to cut over one trillion dollars from the
federal budget. The future of our communities rides on their
recommendations.

Call your Senators and Representative and tell them to get their
priorities straight. Jobs, not wars! Call TOLL FREE 1-888-784-0527

Friday will mark the ten-year anniversary of the U.S. invasion of
Afghanistan - the longest war in U.S. history. For the past decade, our
federal budget has prioritized wars abroad over our needs at home. The
main obstacle to creating jobs for the millions of unemployed and to protecting
Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid is the Pentagon budget and the
costs of the wars. It's time to straighten out these twisted priorities.

Tell your Congressional Representative: Cut the Pentagon budget and bring
the tax dollars home from the wars!

shoppers will be able to reduce their impact on the environment by making
a majority of their holiday purchases in one place. Beyond supporting
local businesses and organizations, the event will also provide
children's activities.  There will also be a light lunch for sale.

Venders and crafters may purchase a table for only $10.00, and
informational tables for non-profit organizations are $5.00.  Please
respond ASAP!

Program Schedule for October:

* Oct. 9: Heyward Ehrlich on the Kabbalah: Kabbalah is an unusual
mystical tradition. Despite its oral origins, it never departs
entirely from fundamental texts. Both medieval and modern Kabbalah are
remarkable for their connections with other systems of interpretive
analogy, including Hermeticism, the Christian Cabala, theosophy, and
contemporary New Age ephemera.  Prohibited from representing graven
images, kabbalists often described divine manifestations in an
indirect manner, representing them in a variety of organic and
geometric metaphors.   Heyward Ehrlich is Professor Emeritus of the
Department of English, Rutgers University in Newark. He publishes on
James Joyce, Edgar Allan Poe, and digital humanities and actively
researches cultural history and early visual media, He has presented his
talk, "Images of Kabbalah," at Dana Library of Rutgers University and for
the Buffalo Havorah.

Concert featuring Guellermo Cuéllar (part of the Joseph J. Naples '41 Conversations in Christ & Culture, Lecture and Performance Series 2011-201)
"On October 29, the Video Institute at Canisius will present the premier of the documentary film, Immersion El Salvador. Along with this premier, we are fortunate to host the highly celebrated
Salvadoran folk singer and composer of El Salvador's popular mass, Guellermo Cuéllar.
Follow a group of students and faculty as they travel to El Salvador with the Institute for the Global Study of Religion at Canisius College. Immersion: El Salvador, a 30-minute documentary produced by the Canisius College Video Institute, highlights the students' journey of
self- awareness and enlightenment as they explore faith, religion, culture, and justice in this Central American country.
In addition to tonight's premier we feature a concert by Guillermo Cuéllar. Cuéllar is one of the most famous singer/songwriters in El Salvador. A close friend of the martyred Archbishop Oscar Romero, several of Guellar's songs, from his Salvadoran Popular Mass were featured in the
movie Romero. Over the past two decades Cuellar has traveled and performed extensively throughout the world."
