WNY Peace Center's Weekly News September 28, 2011

Peacemakers,

The Buffalo Activist
Peacemakers,

The Buffalo Activist
The next issue of the Buffalo Activist will be published in late October.
Members of the WNY Peace Center and its friends are invited to submit
articles to the Buffalo Activist. Local content is especially encouraged.
If you participated in visiting/phoning congresspeople, vigils, walks,
demos, etc --- write it up! Articles about the national and international
situation are also welcome.
Please send your articles to Director@wnypeac
e.org by October 15, 2011.
Thanks to those who have already submitted articles.
------------------------------
October2011.org: Occupation of Freedom Plaza, Washington DC.
The WNYPeace Center encourages your participation of what will be a
continuously running non-violent event in Washington DC, beginning October
6.

The cheapest bus seems to be Megabus (Megabus.com) and two buses go
between Buffalo and Washington DC daily.

Thanks to a generous anonymous donor, the WNY Peace Center will subsidize
bus fairs for low income individuals ($20) for the first 25 low-income
people applying.

We are collecting names of individuals wishing to travel with a group from
Buffalo. Please send your contact info to Director@wnypeace.org, or call
332-3904 and leave a message. If enough people sign up, the Peace Center
will consider renting a small van -- the cost per person is about the same
as Megabus....

Program Schedule for October:
* Oct. 2 DVD: "The Real Dirt on Farmer John"
* Oct. 9: Heyward Ehrlich on the Kabbalah: Kabbalah is an unusual
mystical tradition. Despite its oral origins, it never departs
entirely from fundamental texts. Both medieval and modern Kabbalah are
remarkable for their connections with other systems of interpretive
analogy, including Hermeticism, the Christian Cabala, theosophy, and
contemporary New Age ephemera.  Prohibited from representing graven
images, kabbalists often described divine manifestations in an
indirect manner, representing them in a variety of organic and
geometric metaphors.   Heyward Ehrlich is Professor Emeritus of the
Department of English, Rutgers University in Newark. He publishes on
James Joyce, Edgar Allan Poe, and digital humanities and actively
researches cultural history and early visual media, He has presented
his talk, "Images of Kabbalah," at Dana Library of Rutgers University

Suzanne Montalalo <movetoamendbuffalony@gmail.com>
with the local  move to amend organizing, says:

"Our next meeting is October 5, 2011. We will meet at CWA 1168 at 505
Delaware at 6:30 p.m.  We have confirmed David Cobb will give a half day
training on December 1 starting at 4:30 at this same location. We talked at
the last meeting about our message and trying to identify groups who we
would like to make presentations to. If you know of a group or organization
you feel would be interested in learning about our organization and what
amending the constitution could mean, please send me or bring along their
contact information and we can arrange to have someone to present to them.
We also want to plan an event between now and December 1st. Ideas or
suggestions are welcome. January 21, 2012 is the two year anniversary of
Citizens' United and we would like to do something big to mark that day, in
protest. Possibly stage a funeral for Democracy in front of the Federal
Court House? Or do a flash mob, but I have not made any real progress with
efforts on that idea. Please  bring a friend if you want!"

students at the University of Rochester," says Kit Miller, Director of
the Gandhi Institute. "We look forward to being a good neighbor in the
Plymouth Exchange neighborhood, as well as being better able to serve
people in Rochester and beyond from this new location."

Joel Seligman, University of Rochester President, applauds the move.
"What could be more appropriate than the M.K. Gandhi Institute both
being part of the University of Rochester and the Rochester community?"
he says. "I congratulate Kit and the Institute for taking the lead and
making this happen."

The Institute's new neighbors are also enthusiastic about the move. "We
look forward to working with them," says Dorothy Hall, President of the
Plymouth Exchange Neighborhood Association.

The Institute's new home, a century-old two-story house that's
undergoing a complete rehab, will include a conference and workshop room
to be used for Nonviolent Communication classes, the seasonal
Nonviolence Intensive training, and monthly "Being the Change"
workshops, among other programming for students and the community.

The M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence was founded in 1991 by one of
Mohandas K. Gandhi's grandchildren, Arun Gandhi.  Originally hosted by
Christian Brothers University in Memphis, Tennessee, it moved to the
University of Rochester in 2007.

The Gandhi Institute seeks to realize the vision of the historic
peacemaker by helping individuals and communities develop the inner
resources and practical skills needed to achieve a nonviolent,
sustainable, and just world. Seeking to educate, embody, and serve, the
Institute primarily works in the areas of nonviolence education,
sustainability, and restorative justice.
